To recognise World Day for Safety and Health at Work, Streif UK is highlighting the importance of health and safety in the construction sector. As Constructionline Gold Members and Smas Worksafe Contractors, we maintain the highest health and safety standards for our staff and contractors.
World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2024
As stated by the United Nations: “The annual World Day for Safety and Health at Work on 28 April promotes the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases globally.
“It is an awareness-raising campaign intended to focus international attention on the magnitude of the problem and on how promoting and creating a safety and health culture can help reduce the number of work-related deaths and injuries…
“As employers, we are responsible for ensuring that the working environment is safe and healthy. As workers, we are responsible to work safely and to protect ourselves and not to endanger others, to know our rights and to participate in the implementation of preventive measures”.
This year’s theme for World Day for Safety and Health at Work is the impacts of climate change, a subject close to our hearts as sustainable building system specialists.
Examples of occupational health and safety risks linked to climate change include:
- Heat stress
- UV radiation
- Air pollution
- Major industrial accidents
- Extreme weather events
- An increase in vector-borne diseases
- Increased exposure to chemicals
Safety, health and sustainability at Streif UK
Our off-site building systems can be designed to meet Passivhaus and BREEAM standards, which combat many climate change health risks for our clients.
According to Passivhaus Trust, the clean air benefits of our sustainable building designs include:
- Passive design working with the climate of the build’s location to deliver good levels of ventilation
- Reducing internal pollutants such as Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
- Dealing with internal humidity — to eliminate condensation and mould
- Improving quality of life for people with chronic illness or disabilities
- Protecting against external air pollutants
- Reducing the risk of airborne infection
And in dealing with sustainable building materials and processes, our staff benefit from a healthier working environment. Streif UK ensures, so far as is reasonably practicable, that:
- Safe equipment is provided and safe systems of work are devised and implemented
- Adequate arrangements are in place for the safe use, handling, storage and transport of materials, substances and equipment
- Sufficient information, instruction, training and supervision is given to ensure the health and safety of employees/operatives and others affected by their actions
- A safe workplace, including a safe means of entering and leaving workplaces, is provided and maintained
- The working environment is without risks to health and adequate welfare facilities are provided
More on our commitment to offer products manufactured with the challenge of climate change in mind can be read in our Environment and Sustainability Policy.
