Built in 2008 for Stoke on Trent College as part of the Nu Build 09 project in association with Advantage West Midlands, BRE and Kier, the semi detached houses are used as a demonstration facility for teaching modern methods of construction, offsite manufacturing and sustainable building technology to the college's construction skills students.
The eco friendly STREIF building was designed to meet Level 4 of the Code For Sustainable Homes and still acts as a regional knowledge centre for planners, architects, housing providers and contractors.
Built to a standard STREIF design, and featuring rendered and timber clad facades below staggered mono pitch roofs with solar panels, the houses are a good example of what can be achieved using modern methods of construction within the volume housing market. The complete 219 m² building including the roof tiling was put up in only four days, as captured on the college’s webcam opposite.
