Grammar school building project client
The Streif UK team designed and constructed a grammar school building project in 2022. Teaming up with Baxall Construction (main contractor) and Clague Architects, we delivered a two-storey teaching block for Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys. Kent County Council and the school were delighted with the new build.
School building project brief
With a shortage of selective secondary school places in the Canterbury district, Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys were under pressure to increase their admittance numbers. They needed an expansion to meet both their current and future demands.
This called for a new two-storey classroom block, accommodating general and specialist teaching spaces. The existing temporary classrooms also needed to be removed. The total value of the grammar school building project was £4 million.
School building project solution and process
Streif UK worked with Baxall Construction and Clague Architects to design and build 13 new general classrooms and 3 ICT/business classrooms. We also provided office accommodation and plant spaces (internally and roof mounted).
With the client and main contractor keen to use a Modern Method of Construction, our advanced closed panel timber frame system was ideal for this grammar school building project.
Rationel AURAPLUS windows and doors, factory fitted to precision, added quality-controlled air tightness for a truly energy-efficient building. While the external finish combined yellow brick and Equitone cladding for a neat, fresh look.
Demonstrating once again our sustainable building systems significantly reduce build time, the lift and installation of our offsite manufactured closed timber panel construction took only 11 weeks.
Since noise is a major consideration for schools, Baxall Construction also commissioned Anderson Acoustics to provide acoustic design advice from RIBA 2 to RIBA 6. Additional works included a dining hall extension as well as extra car parking and a bus turning area.
Grammar school building project results
This grammar school building project continued our relationship with Baxall Construction, who we worked with on Platt Church of England Primary School and other builds.
It was great to get feedback from their Design Manager, Maria Barnes: “Very proactive and helpful throughout the design process”.
We also received this glowing email testimonial from Matthew Fothergill, MCIOB senior Site Manager, Baxall Construction:
“… I’m writing to congratulate and thank you all for your teamwork, commitment, and shear hard work at Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys…
The project was successfully handed over to a delighted school and KCC on Friday 5/8/22 with zero defects, to the highest standards of quality and finish and two weeks earlier than the contract programme. There were some challenges on this project. But, as always, you came together, worked collaboratively, and surpassed the clients and end user expectations.
…I look forward to working with you all again in the future and thank you all once again”.
The Streif UK team was pleased to deliver another low-energy, first-class learning environment for an expanding Kent School.
