Hailsham Primary Academy is a new state-of-the-art primary and nursery school in Hailsham, East Sussex. The new build 2FE primary school with a GIFA of 2498m2 constructed for East Sussex County Council will create 420 primary and nursery places to serve the north Hailsham community.

The innovative design of the brand new £8 million building was thanks to project architects Miller Bourne who were involved in the project from concept design right through to completion. The project was procured through the Orbis framework, with the design and build contract being awarded to Main Contractor Morgan Sindall Construction. Streif have delivered a number of previous projects for East Sussex County Council (ESCC), who as an early adopter of modular offsite construction have already seen the true benefits of the Streif system when delivering buildings within the Education sector.

The School was built on a greenfield site to accommodate the increased pressure on the local education system due to the significant levels of new homes being built in the area. As well as creating a separate nursery facility for 40 children, the 14 classrooms are equipped with state-of-the-art technology. There will be a library and separate food science and technology areas, SEN therapy rooms and a multi-use hall space for dining and sports.

The stylish form of the building is a mixture of single and two storey elements broken up using a combination of mono-pitch and flat roof sections along the length of the building. Externally finishes of brickwork and wood effect cladding give the building a natural and harmonious feel which is offset by the pops of blue used for the external canopies, whilst internally the classrooms are light and spacious due to vaulted ceilings and high level windows creating the perfect environment for learning.

Erection (1st fix) of the Streif system was split over three phases from 11 March to 14 June 2019 inclusive of completion (2nd fix) works – by the time we left site the building was watertight, bricklayers were well underway and the site was flooded with subcontractors of all trades on all floors both in and outside the building. All this was achieved with just seven Streif operatives plus the crane driver.

The end result was a success for all involved and resulted in Streif being awarded Sub-Contractor of the Year by Morgan Sindall Construction (South) on the back of all the hard work from our teams both on and offsite.
